Shutka is the largest settled Gypsy community of any city in the world (approx. 70,000 people). Although part of Skopje, Shutka is a unique and separate community. It is a very needy area, housing is poor and even basic amenities are very often lacking.
Typically, boys and girls in Shutka complete only the 8th grade in school. Very few attend post-primary or secondary schools. Significant numbers of children do not attend primary school regularly; some do not attend at all. Many are encouraged to beg on the streets to earn money for their families rather than go to school.
The aim of Little Friends is to provide a service into a very needy community. To give the children who attendthe Pre-School better educational opportunities. Through an interactive programme we aim to develop them socially, physically, intellectually and spiritually and, through them, to influence their families and community.
Little Friends has been running for 5 years and 90 children have successfully completed the programme. We are encouraged to continue and develop our work and would like to be able to accept more children into the Pre-School.
Little Friends is the name of the Pre-School started by the Macedonian Association for Humanitarian Support (MAHS).
The Pre-School was opened in 1999.
